Overview

The ATC Control Tower is a listed building within the Imperial War Museum (IWM) complex at Duxford. The refurbishment was executed under strict heritage specifications, covering both external and internal works. With the museum remaining open throughout, careful planning was undertaken to protect sensitive exhibits and minimise disruption to visitors. Armour Hart’s multi-disciplined workforce handled all aspects of the project, enabling high quality control and efficient resource deployment.

The outcome

A sensitive heritage project restoring and improving both exterior and interior of the Control Tower, complying with heritage standards, enabling the museum to stay operational for visitors, and enhancing visitor experience.

  • Render & metalwork restoration Render repaired; all external metal windows, doors, frames, and metal parts prepared, painted, and repaired as needed.
  • Joinery & glazing Glazing replaced, joinery repairs carried out, putty raked out and replaced.
  • Roof & cladding upgrades Internal roof-deck waterproofing, replacement of cladding system internally.
  • Detail preservation Door signage removed and re-fixed; museum and exhibit sensitivities considered throughout works.
  • Visitor-friendly execution Minimal disruption to museum visitors; sensitive handling of historical context.
